What You Need to Know About the DWV System

In our previous blog, we have listed down the different types of plumbing system that can be found in your home. Now, we will dig a little bit deeper on Drain-Waste-Vent or DWV system.

According to Plumbfix, in modern plumbing, a drain-waste-vent (or DWV) is part of a system that removes sewage and greywater from a building, and regulates air pressure in the waste-system pipes to aid free flow. A DWV plumbing system is the collection of pipes that are responsible for disposing your home’s sewage and water wastes from your toilet bowls, bathtubs, showers, sinks and other appliances like dishwashers and washing machines.

Your DWV plumbing system is vital in order to prevent your sewage and waste water from spilling into your house, possibly harming your health.

The system is divided into two parts: the drain-waste pipes and the vent pipes.

The Drain-Waste Pipes

This part of the DWV system is responsible for taking the actual wastes from the various drains (e.g. bathroom, sink) and appliances inside your home and delivers them to the public sewer or the septic tank.

The Vent Pipes

One of the functions of the vent pipes is to ventilate the sewage gases out of the house through an exhaust pipe on the roof. The other function of the vent pipes is to provide air for the drain-waste pipes to perform its function. The air helps the sewage drain smoothly without the gurgling noise that can really be bothering.

In addition, the structure of DWV systems are commonly composed of the horizontal and vertical pipes. The vertical pipes are called stack that usually goes on from the roof to the basement. Connected to the stack are the multiple horizontal pipes located at each level or division of home.

The horizontal pipes catch the waste water from the drains of your sinks, toilets, and showers. These pipes then slope down from the drain to the stack in order to avoid clogs and stagnant water.
